Accounting BS - Academic Experience

(HEGIS: 05.02 ACCOUNTING, CIP: 52.0301 Accounting)

Academic Opportunities

Students in this program complete the bachelor’s degree in four years. The program offers courses that are aligned with the requirements of the CPA exam. This course of study also prepares students for graduate programs in accounting, taxation, and other related areas. Qualified students from this program are given priority when they apply for our Master of Science in Accounting at UB. This program supports student clubs (Beta Alpha Psi and UB Accounting Club) by funding club activities and providing faculty advisors for the clubs. Members of these clubs have consistently earned awards in competitions and other high visibility events at the national level. Students are also supported by the program for their participation in many community services that give them the opportunity to use their academic skills (e.g. knowledge about income tax return preparation) to benefit the local community.

Experiential Learning

School of Management students, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participate in internship and experiential learning opportunities. Our exclusive recruitment system, BizLink, is home to internship postings for our students. Every posting is pre-screened to ensure they are related to the curriculum and meaningful in nature. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Career Passport Program for additional engagement with employers and alumni. Programs such as Case Competitions and the Management Volunteer Program provide students with comprehensive and coordinated opportunities for career development, emphasizing interpersonal and social skills required for success in business. Accounting majors participate in our nationally recognized Free Tax Preparation program. These types of experiences are often sought after by employers in the recruitment process and are expected content on student resumes.

Study Abroad

In an evolving global economy, there is no question that our best prepared students will bring an international perspective with them when they enter the job market. Not only will the experience provide valuable insight from a career perspective, but study abroad is a personally transformative experience. Whether you choose to participate in our School of Management faculty led study trips or from the vast menu of options through the UB Study Abroad Program, you are sure to find study abroad a life-changing experience. Students may participate in study trips at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Extracurricular Activities

Where passion and action meet, there are more than 20 School of Management clubs and associations open to our undergraduate and graduate students. Included in these are several national organizations. For more information, see our Student Clubs Directory for club websites and contact information.

See the UB Student Association for additional opportunities to become involved in the UB community.

Honors and Awards

Outstanding majors are recognized at an annual awards banquet in the spring. Students are recognized for both academic achievement and contribution to the department. The NYSSCPA John T. Kennedy Memorial Award is awarded to a junior accounting major with the highest overall scholastic average. The NYSSCPA Award of Honor is presented to the graduating senior with the highest scholastic average in accounting. Senior accounting majors vote to select the recipient of the Lisa Friedman Award. This award is given to the female graduating senior majoring in accounting who, in the opinion of her peers, has the highest potential as a professional accountant and as a friend, on the basis of integrity and potential contributions to the accounting profession. The Eddy Lin Memorial Award is given to the graduating senior majoring in accounting who has strong academic performance, is focusing on an accounting career with a mid-size public accounting firm, and who demonstrates a passion for learning, active mentoring of others, and possession of a caring and fun attitude. The UB Accounting Association Michael S. Dockery Memorial Senior Award is presented to senior accounting students who have contributed in a superior way to the Institute of Internal Auditors, the accounting profession, fellow students and the School of Management, as voted by members of the club. Beta Alpha Psi members select the recipient of the PwC Emerging Leader Award. An emerging leader is a role model for their peers by positively influencing them through demonstrating inclusive & collaborative thinking, a positive attitude, and a drive for professional and personal development.

Departmental Honors

See the School of Management Honors Program for Departmental Honors. Less than 5% of our majors qualify to participate. In this elite program, you will strengthen your leadership skills through an individualized development plan, specialized courses and opportunities to complement and enhance what you learn in the classroom.

Additionally, the top 10% of the graduating class is invited by Beta Gamma Sigma to join their premier honor society recognizing business excellence.
