Completing the Anthropology Minor Program

Academic Advice

Minors are encouraged to register early so that they may be included in the department email list and receive all announcements of departmental events. They are encouraged to participate in activities of the Anthropology Club. Department academic advisors are not assigned to anthropology minors. Those with questions should consult the Undergraduate Coordinator or the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Prerequisite Courses

There are no prerequisite courses.

Required Courses

Minor students may focus in one of the following areas:

General Anthropology

Minimum of seven required courses, including: APY 106, APY 107, APY 108, and four department electives, including one area studies course at the 200 level or above

Archaeology

Minimum of six required courses, including: APY 105, APY 108, and four department electives, including one area studies course at the 200 level or above

Cultural Anthropology

Minimum of six required courses, including: APY 105, APY 106, and four department electives, including one area studies course at the 200 level or above

Physical Anthropology

Minimum of six required courses, including: APY 105, APY 107, and four department electives, including one area studies course at the 200 level or above

Medical Anthropology

Minimum of seven required courses, including: APY 106, APY 107, APY 275, and four department electives. One of these electives must be an area studies course at the 200 level or above. Three of the electives are to be chosen from the following list of recommended premedical/pre-dental concentration courses:

  • APY 276 Introduction to Ethnomedicine
  • APY 312 Culture and Reproduction
  • APY 345 & APY 346 Comparative Primate Anatomy & Dissection Lab
  • APY 348 Forensic Anthropological Osteology
  • APY 394 Religion and Healing in Native South America
  • APY 448 Human Genetics: Legal & Ethical Issues
  • APY 476 Health Care in the U.S.
  • APY 477 Topics in Medical Anthropology
  • APY 545 Dental Anthropology (with permission of instructor)
