Completing the Architecture Minor Program

Academic Requirements

  • Applications for the Architecture Minor are accepted on a rolling basis
  • Minimum GPA of 2.000 overall and minimum GPA of 2.500 in two 100/200-level architecture courses for admission to the Architecture Minor;
  • A minimum of 9 credits and 3 courses at the 100- or 200- level,
  • A minimum of 12 credits and 4 courses at the 300- or 400-level; and
  • An ARC-prefixed GPA of 2.500 in Architecture Minor courses, a minimum overall University at Buffalo GPA of 2.000, and a minimum of seven courses and 21 credits is required for program completion.
  • The Architecture Minor is typically completed within 6 semesters.

All students must complete a minimum of 9 credit hours and three courses in the lower division and a minimum of 12 credit hours and four courses in the upper division. Students devise an Architecture Minor plan of study in consultation with their school advisors

No more than 3 credits of ARC 467 (Research Practice), 3 credits of ARC 496 (Community Design Service), and 3 credits of ARC 499 (Independent Study) may be applied toward Architecture Minor requirements.

Other relevant courses (such as Special Topics courses) in the undergraduate curriculum from University at Buffalo Architecture may be approved for the minor, with qualified special permission, from the course instructor and School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education.

No more than six credits of architecture transfer coursework may be applied toward Architecture Minor requirements. Contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education for more information.

The following courses cannot be used toward Architecture Minor requirements: ARC 101, ARC 111, ARC 102, ARC 112, ARC 201, ARC 202, ARC 301, ARC 302, ARC 311, ARC 312, ARC 403, ARC 404, ARC 411, ARC 412.

Upon admission to the Architecture Minor, it is strongly recommended that students complete the Architecture Shop Safety Workshop. For more information on the Safety Workshop, contact the Architecture Materials Shop, 2 Parker Hall, South Campus.

A minimum ARC-prefixed GPA of 2.500 in all Architecture Minor courses and minimum overall University at Buffalo GPA of 2.000 is required for successful completion of the program.

Transfer Credit Policy

Courses completed at other colleges and universities are not automatically accepted by University at Buffalo Architecture as fulfilling departmental requirements. While select architecture courses taken elsewhere may be accepted, determination is made by an evaluation of the student's transcripts, course content, contact hours, and grades earned. A minimum passing grade on a 4.0 scale is required in each course for possible articulation to courses in accordance with SUNY policy. Student transcript evaluations are conducted by School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education. Design studio courses completed at other colleges are accepted as by University at Buffalo Architecture as transfer elective credit only. Contact School of Architecture and Planning Undergraduate Education for academic advisement.

Residency Requirement

A minimum of 15 ARC-prefixed credit hours must be completed at the University at Buffalo to satisfy the Architecture Minor’s academic residency requirement. A minimum overall University at Buffalo GPA of 2.000 and minimum ARC-prefixed GPA of 2.500 in minor courses is required to graduate with the Architecture Minor.

Prerequisite Courses

Two 100/200-level architecture courses with a minimum GPA of 2.500 in both courses and a minimum University at Buffalo GPA of 2.000.

LOWER-DIVISION COURSES (select at least three courses):

  • ARC 121 Introduction to Architecture
  • ARC 122 Architectural Sketching and the Built Environment
  • ARC 211 American Diversity and Design
  • ARC 231 Architecture History: Ancient - 1450
  • ARC 234 Architecture History: 1450 - Present
  • ARC 280 Environment and Landscapes

UPPER-DIVISION COURSES 
Select at least four courses (12 credits) of 300 or 400 level ARC courses (as well as END 357 Creative Problem Solving for Global Environments). The following courses cannot be used towards the Architecture Minor upper division requirements:

Departmental Honors Requirements

University at Buffalo Architecture offers the designations “with distinction,” “with high distinction,” and “with highest distinction” to students who achieve a certain level of academic excellence in the major or minor upon graduation.

The award of Program Distinction is based on the UB GPA for the program. A minimum of 50% of credits for the major or minor program must be completed at UB. University at Buffalo Architecture requires a minimum of 3.25 for “with distinction”; 3.50 for “with high distinction”; and 3.75 for “with highest distinction.”

Minors and certificates must be completed in conjunction with a major and all university degree requirements must be met.

Students should consult with an academic advisor to determine how any transfer or exam credit might be utilized in meeting general education, prerequisite, or minor requirements.
