Biological Sciences BS/PharmD - Academic Experience

Research

Students have the opportunity to perform research (BIO 498 Undergraduate Research) in the laboratories of departmental faculty members. In exceptional cases, students in the combined program may also be able to apply to the Biological Sciences Honors Research Program.

Internships and Clinical Rotations

Standard internships are not part of the undergraduate experience. All professional (PharmD students) must engage in clinical rotations through the profession's Experiential Education requirements: Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE). The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences maintains both academic and research experiences with a variety of local, regional, national and international sites.

Postgraduate Opportunities

Postgraduate residencies and fellowships are available through formalized partnerships with pharmacy practice and research training programs throughout the nation.

A wide range of opportunities are available for students majoring in the biological sciences to gain experience outside of traditional lecture and laboratory coursework. Among the nationally recognized faculty in the department, many lead externally-funded laboratories where students find research positions and thus gain valuable experience under the guidance of their faculty mentors. Students engaged in research (BIO 498 Undergraduate Research) may earn academic credit, or in some cases students may be remunerated for their work if their mentors have grant funds for that purpose.

PharmD students are involved in many opportunities for professional and personal growth, including community wellness clinics and poison prevention education programs. The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has multiple global health initiatives in education and scholarship available in order to expose students to practical global health concerns, promote culturally competent healthcare, and foster the development of servant leadership in global populations locally, nationally, and internationally.

Undergraduate Biology Association: This organization is an active group open to all students. It sponsors special speakers on research, graduate school, and other selected topics. It also sponsors social activities.

Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE): The goal of WiSE is to increase the recruitment, retention and success of women in science, technology, engineering and math.
