Academic Requirements

A minimum combined GPA of 3.000 for required courses is required for retention in the major. At the end of every semester a review of all coursework is completed, and any student not meeting the GPA minimum for four consecutive semesters will be dismissed from the major.

Residency Requirement

A student must complete a minimum of 30 undergraduate credit hours (the equivalent of one full year of study) at the University at Buffalo in order to earn a degree from the university. The minimum residency requirement for the combined undergraduate and graduate degree is 42 credit hours, of which 18 must be undergraduate and 24 must be graduate.

The following forms of credit may not be used to fulfill the residency requirement: transfer work; proficiency exams; Advanced Placement; military training; study abroad; cross-registration; international baccalaureate credit; and experiential learning.

Departmental Honors Requirements

Students with a GPA ≥ 3.600 may apply to the departmental honors program during Fall of the junior year. Accepted students take Honors Research in Biology (BIO 487) during Spring of the junior year, and the senior year is devoted to laboratory research where the student completes six credits of honors-level, biological research (BIO 497) in the laboratory of a UB faculty member. The research is presented at the departmental Honors symposium at the end of Spring semester. BIO 497 credits count for two of the BIO 498 requirements, and BIO 487 counts towards the UB Curriculum CL2 requirement. Students must maintain a 3.600 or greater GPA through graduation to graduate with honors. Honors students with a GPA of 3.600-3.790 will graduate with Honors. Students with GPAs of 3.800 and above will graduate with High Honors. Successful participation in the honors program and distinction level will be reflected on student diplomas.
