The combined Business Administration BS – Financial Analysis Concentration/MS provides a full-life-cycle educational pathway students. Our program provides you with an educational experience that offers both quality and value and provides a path seamlessly completing your undergraduate and graduate degrees. This program provide a cost and time efficient means to increase a student’s career potential.

This is a five-year program combining undergraduate and graduate coursework that will help you to accelerate your business career with a focused graduate-level education where you will gain strong analytical skills, academic training and practical tools that financial market employers are seeking in their ideal candidates. At the graduate level, students choose an academic and career track from the following options:

  • Quantitative Finance

Learning Outcomes

Our Undergraduate and Graduate Programs are committed to making a difference in the lives of our students, guided by a culture of responsibility and mutual respect. Learning outcomes for the programs are determined and continuously updated through discussion with the faculty group responsible for delivery of the courses in the program, as well as external stakeholders such as the School of Management’s Deans Advisory Council and recruiters of our students.

In a volatile financial economy, employers seek future leaders like you with advanced knowledge to make sound financial decisions. You will gain the strong analytical skills, academic training and practical tools that financial market employers are seeking in their ideal candidates.

UB’s MS Finance qualifies as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program in Financial Mathematics, which provides an additional 24 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 visa holders who begin their programs in fall 2016 or later. The Learning Environment

Courses in the program are delivered by highly qualified faculty using instructional approaches that ensure the learning outcomes of each course. Students take a series of prerequisite courses early in their academic careers that serve as a foundation for the upper-level core curriculum. There are upper-level core requirements that cut across multiple management disciplines providing a comprehensive understanding and application of contemporary management practices. Many courses are project-based integrating case studies. The capstone course offers academic training with real-world exposure through experiential learning.

Several of the courses are delivered via Digital Access or in lecture halls, while the other half average 45 students. Recitations that accompany core courses are taught by teaching assistants in class sizes of approximately 30 or less. The class size for additional required concentration courses typically average 45 students. 

About Our Facilities

The Jacobs Management Center and the adjacent Alfiero Center offer a complete home for management students, faculty and staff. Together, they are among only a few buildings at UB that commingle classrooms and offices, creating an interactive community of professionals, students and scholars. The School has a computer lab with exclusive access for School of Management students.

There are nine student breakout rooms each outfitted with a large monitor for displaying laptop content. There are numerous tables and work spaces throughout the three floors of the atrium for group work, studying, networking, and socializing with peers. Take a virtual tour.

The Undergraduate Learning and Community Center includes classrooms, a community area, tutoring facilities and a group study area — all dedicated exclusively to our undergraduates, with technology throughout to enhance student experiences. The new center offers a bright, colorful space dedicated exclusively, to help undergrads feel at home in the School of Management.

About Our Faculty

Eight members of our faculty are recipients of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes outstanding teaching ability through superb classroom performance. These scholars bring to their classes broad interests and current, far-ranging knowledge.

The faculty of the program consists of ladder faculty and clinical faculty. Both types of faculty have the highest academic degree required for their appointment. Ladder faculty members hold doctoral degrees and maintain an active research record by publishing in the top and leading academic journals in their area of expertise. Clinical faculty members hold one or several professional certificates (e.g., CPA) in addition to academic degrees required for their appointment. Academically qualified clinical faculty also publish in their area of expertise. Our faculty frequently attend conferences, workshops, and other professional meetings to update their knowledge and develop professional networks. Our faculty is actively engaged in mentoring students (e.g., serving as faculty advisor of student clubs and coaching student teams in case competition) and ensuring a high-quality learning environment.

This expertise enables them to illustrate the theoretical side of business concepts and bring them to life with practical industry examples. Our faculty's commitment to teaching, along with their contacts, availability and friendliness, makes them a powerful and highly approachable resource for our students.

Career Outlook

The Career Resource Center (CRC) exclusively serves School of Management students and alumni and promotes proactive career exploration and development with life-long strategies for individual career success. The CRC is also a key link between the school and employers, offering programs that maximize connections between our students, employers, and networks. In addition to job fairs, employer sessions and networking events, the CRC has tailored programming for undergraduate students through the Career Passport Program. This program includes two hands-on courses facilitated by CRC staff that will lead you through every aspect of your career development process. Self-assessment, résumé writing, interviewing skills and job-search techniques are just a few of the topics covered in this mandatory, two-course sequence.

Academic Advising

The School of Management’s Undergraduate Academic Programs office provides guidance and support to students majoring in Accounting and Business Administration. The department has six full-time, master’s educated, professional academic advisors who work with a designated student caseload. Student caseload is distributed based on the first letter of the student’s last name. This model enables our advising staff to work with a student from backpack to briefcase throughout the academic career helping to create a sense of community and connection right from a student’s first day on campus. Our advising staff assists with course planning, helping students understand academic policies and procedures, and serves as a resource for students navigating their way through the university environment. The office also has a designated admissions coordinator who works closely with transfer students and UB students planning to change their majors to accounting or business administration.

Scholarships and Financial Support

The School of Management offers a variety of opportunities for supplemental financial support including merit scholarships, study abroad scholarships, travel to professional association conferences or national competitions through our annual WOW fund program, and opportunities through various undergraduate competitions such as our annual Undergraduate Poster Competition.
