Completing the Communication BA Program

Academic Advice

Minimum GPA of 2.5 in communication courses at UB is required for graduation.
Minors and/or joint majors are encouraged (see communication advisor).

Transfer Credit Policy

Transfer students are required to seek Advisement from the Communications Department. Listings of these courses are available through the TAURUS website. Transfer students may check with the department concerning the acceptability of individual courses, and should provide the academic advisor with a transcript, course description and syllabus of any courses they wish to apply to the communication curriculum. The department accepts no more than four appropriate communication courses toward the major requirements, specifically the core required classes and the communication electives.

SUNY Seamless Transfer is a SUNY-wide program intended to make transferring to UB and other SUNY Schools simple and efficient for SUNY students. SUNY has defined courses that SUNY students can take before transferring which will apply to the major at UB and ensure timely graduation.

Prerequisite Courses

COM 101 Principles of Communication 

Plus two of the following:
COM 217 Communication in Organizations
COM 225 Interpersonal Communication
COM 240 Survey of Mass Communication
COM 337 Communication Theory
One statistics course (with a grade of C or better)
CSE 111 or CSE 113

Required Courses

Take the remaining two courses which were not used for the prerequisites:

One 100 or 200 level LIN course, excluding LIN 198 and LIN 199 (UBC first semester seminars) or COM 125 Introduction to the Internet

One of the following:

One advanced writing course

One research methods course:

And, eight com electives

Electives

Only two informal courses (e.g., COM 496 Internship and COM 499 Independent Study) of 3 credit hours or more may be counted toward the eight communication elective courses.
