Computer Science Minor - Program Requirements

(HEGIS: , CIP: 11.0101 Computer and Information Sciences, General)

Completing the Computer Science Minor Program

Academic Requirements

Minors are awarded in conjunction with a major. All university degree requirements must be met upon completion.

Academic Advice

Students should consult with an academic advisor to determine how to best incorporate a minor within their major program of study.

Transfer Credit Policy

Transfer students must first apply to the university and meet the university transfer admission requirements. For admission of transfer students to engineering, see School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Transfer Policy in the Undergraduate Catalog, as well as additional departmental admission information.

Computing courses taken outside the department, and offered as substitutes for computer science courses, are evaluated individually by the department. The student must provide evidence to help the department determine whether courses taken at another institution are equivalent to UB courses; course syllabi are generally preferable to catalog descriptions as catalog descriptions do not provide enough detail for accurate evaluation. Additional information on course equivalencies may be found on the university's transfer and articulation website TAURUS.

Residency Requirement

At least three CSE courses for the minor must be taken at UB.

Prerequisite Courses

CSE 115 Introduction to Computer Science I*
CSE 116 Introduction to Computer Science II
CSE 191 Introduction to Discrete Structures (Students who have taken MTH 311 can substitute it for CSE 191)

Required Courses

  • Six CSE courses (excluding CSE 101, CSE 111, CSE 199, CSE 492, and CSE 494-499), with at least two at the 300- level or above.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.000 overall in those courses is required for graduation.
  • A maximum of two of these courses may be used for a student's major.
  • Students in the minor program are limited to 6 CSE courses.
  • Students wanting to take additional CSE courses must satisfy the BS CS or BA CS major admission criteria.
  • •    All courses used for the minor must be a minimum of 3 credits.

*Students are permitted to take alternative programming courses EAS 230 or EAS 240 in lieu of CSE 115, however CSE 115 is strongly preferred for Computer Science majors. The alternative programming courses should only be utilized by students transferring into the program with EAS 230, EAS 240, or EAS 999TRCP (general programming for transfer students) already completed. View our Computer Programming Requirement website for more information on the programming alternatives and self-study packages.
