Completing the Creative Writing Certificate Program

Academic Requirements

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.300 overall in required and elective certificate courses in order to be awarded the certificate upon completion of their Bachelors Degree.

Transfer Credit Policy

The English Department awards credit for courses taken elsewhere that approximately correspond — in content, approach, and/or pedagogy — to courses offered in our program.

Prerequisite Courses

ENG 350 Introduction to Writing Poetry & Prose Fiction

Required Courses

Contemporary and Modern Literature requirement, select one from the following:

Select three electives (9 credits) from the following*:

  • ENG 390 Creative Writing Poetry Workshop
  • ENG 391 Creative Writing Fiction Workshop
  • ENG 434 Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry
  • ENG 435 Advanced Creative Writing: Fiction

*Students may request substituting one 300-level writing workshop with a similar writing workshop course in a different genre, such as ENG 393 Literary Non-Fiction or TH 485 Play Writing.
*At least one workshop must be at the 400 level.

ENG 434 Advanced Poetry or ENG 435 Advanced Fiction (3 credits, repeatable for credit)

Minors and certificates must be completed in conjunction with a major and all university degree requirements must be met.
