Becoming an Economics BA/MA Student

A student who completes the undergraduate major in economics has the opportunity to enter either of the Department’s MA in Applied Economics or MS (STEM) Economics Programs. The Department’s combined bachelors/masters (MA and MS) programs allow students to earn both a BA and MA degree in less time than it generally takes to complete the two degrees separately. We recommend students apply to the combined degree in their junior year or earlier.

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered. For the 2019 admitted freshman class, UB reported an average GPA range from 90-96, an average ACT score of 24-30 and an average SAT score of 1180-1350.
The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Freshman Admission to the Program

All entering first-year and transfer students who state an interest in an economics major will be listed as approved majors. In the past, entry to an economics major required an overall GPA of at least 2.000 and also a GPA of at least 2.000 over any two economics courses. This no longer applies because the Department of Economics has adopted UB’s direct admission system.

Advising is provided by the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advising Services and by the Department of Economics.

Transfer Admission to the Program

This no longer applies because the Department of Economics has adopted UB’s direct admission system.
