Electrical Engineering Minor - Program Requirements

Completing the Electrical Engineering Minor Program

Students must be in good academic standing. Minimum GPA for minor completion is 2.000 in minor courses.

Academic Requirements

Minors are awarded in conjunction with a major. All university degree requirements must be met upon completion.

At least three courses applied for the minor cannot be used to fulfill any other program requirements (UB Curriculum, major, or other minor).

Academic Advice

Students should consult with an academic advisor to determine how to best incorporate a minor within their major program of study.

At least three courses applied to the minor must be taken at UB.

Required Courses

The EE Minor program includes seven courses granting at least 24 credits.

Four of the courses are core courses that cover basic knowledge in the electrical engineering discipline, and serve as required courses for the upper-division courses in the minor. Three of the core courses are lower-division courses (1xx, 2xx).

The remaining three courses in the minor are upper-division courses (3xx, 4xx). We allow significant flexibility in the choice of the upper-division courses to allow our students to choose the path that best fits their interests.

To be admitted to the minor program students must be in good academic standing and must complete the following MTH and PHY courses that act as prerequisites to the courses in the minor program.

Core required courses:

EE 178 Digital Principles*
EE 202 Circuit Analysis**
EE 205 Signals and Systems
MTH 306 Introduction to Differential Equations

Three courses from the following list of electives:

  • EE 383 Communication Systems I
  • EE 324 Applied Electromagnetics
  • EE 336 Fundamentals of Energy Systems
  • EE 352 Introduction to Electronics Lab
  • EE 353 Electronic Circuits Lab
  • EE 310 Electronic Devices and Circuits I
  • EE 311 Electronic Devices and Circuits II
  • EE 379 Embedded Systems & Applications
  • EE 478 HDL Based Digital Design with Programmable Logic
  • Any EE Technical elective (labeled EE 4xx)

*Students are permitted to take CSE 241 in lieu of EE 178, however EE 178 is preferred. This option should only be utilized by students who have already completed CSE 241 or are considering a major in Computer Engineering. 

**Students are permitted to take EAS 200 in lieu of EE 202, however EE 202 is preferred. This option should only be utilized by students who have already completed EAS 200 or who are required to complete EAS 200 for their major(s).

Remarks

  • The combination of EE 408 Senior Seminar and EE 494 Senior Design Implementation is considered as a single course towards minor.
  • Students that do not meet prerequisite requirements but have taken courses with similar content should contact the director of undergraduate studies.
  • Minimum GPA for minor graduation is 2.000 (on courses taken in minor).
