Becoming an English BA Student

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores, if applicable. UB supports SUNY’s decision to temporarily suspend SAT and ACT requirements for admissions for the 2021-22 academic year. This temporary change of admissions eligibility requirements applies to the spring 2021, fall 2021 and spring 2022 cycles. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered.

The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Freshman Admission to the Program

All freshmen who select English BA on their UB application are listed as approved majors. New students will be contacted by the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisement & Services office regarding initial course registration after paying their tuition deposit and completing the online Orientation Data Form.

**Effective Spring 2019**

All incoming students with an interest in the English B.A. will be listed as “approved” majors.

Students will no longer be required to complete any courses before becoming “approved” majors.

Students will be monitored each term regarding their progress toward the degree according to the eight-semester plan in the undergraduate catalog.

Advising provided by both CAS advisement and the English department throughout their time at UB.

Transfer Admission to the Program

Transfer students are invited to meet with the director of undergraduate studies to arrange transfer credit for courses to plan a course of study within the major.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

All students with an interest in reading and writing about literature, creative writing, and journalism, are welcome to apply to the English major, as their sole major, a double major, or a joint major.

To request an application form, please send an email to the Office of Undergraduate Studies, or visit us in 303 Clemens Hall. After filling out the application, students usually schedule a meeting with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss their course of study.
