Completing the English BA Program

Academic Requirements

All undergraduate majors include at least 24-credit hours at the upper division (at least 300-level).

Transfer Credit Policy

The English Department awards credit for courses taken elsewhere that approximately correspond — in content, approach, and/or pedagogy — to courses offered in our program.

Required Courses

Three ENG courses (9 credits) at the 200 level
Ten 300/400-level courses*, including:

  • One course (3 credits) from the Criticism/Theory list:
  • Three courses (9 credits) from the Earlier Literature list:
  • One course (3 credits) from the Breadth of Literary Study list:
    • ENG 341 Studies in African American Literature
    • ENG 342 Literature of the Americas
    • ENG 343 Studies in Native American Literature
    • ENG 344 Studies in Asian American Literature
    • ENG 346 Comparative Ethnic Literatures
    • ENG 371 Queer Theory
    • ENG 383 Studies in World Literature
    • ENG 385 Literature of the African Diaspora
    • ENG 386 Postcolonial Literature
  • Five courses (15 credits) of additional elective courses*, of which four courses (12 credits) must be at the ENG or COL 300-400 level, and one course (3 credits) must be at the ENG 400 level (neither an internship nor an independent study can fulfill this requirement)

  • *ENG CL2 courses (ENG 350-359) may not count towards English BA requirements.
