Exercise Science BS/MPH - Applying to the Program

(HEGIS: 08.35 PHYSICAL ED METHODOLOGY, CIP: 26.0908 Exercise Physiology)

Becoming an Exercise Science BS/MPH Student

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores, if applicable. UB supports SUNY’s decision to temporarily suspend SAT and ACT requirements for admissions for the 2021-22 academic year. This temporary change of admissions eligibility requirements applies to the spring 2021, fall 2021 and spring 2022 cycles. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered.

The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Freshman Admission to the Program

Incoming students are designated as ES majors and begin taking prerequisite courses as freshman. Freshman students who enter the university as declared ES majors are directly admitted to the program.

Honors Students only: Students accepted to the University Honors College have the option of applying to the BS/MPH program at the beginning of the freshman year. Students should indicate on their UB application and in their personal statement that they are also applying for admission to the BS/MPH program. The personal statement will be reviewed for an exceptional level of motivation and interest in pursuing the combined degree program. Students must meet all admission requirements for the University Honors College and are not required to take the GRE exam if accepted into the combined program as a freshman.

Transfer Admission to the Program

Students who transfer to UB from another institution will be directly admitted to the ES major.

Courses must be articulated to UB to be used towards required coursework for the major.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Current UB students will apply to the graduate portion of the BS/MPH program in year three. The GRE score is required at the time of application. Achievement at or above the 50th percentile on each section of the GRE is required. The student must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.000 and grades of C or better in the following courses: CHE 101, CHE 102, PSY 101, NTR 108, PHY 101, PHY 151, PHY 102, PHY 152, ES 207, and ES 200, and grades of B or better in the following courses: PUB 101 Intro to Public Health, PGY 300 Physiology, MTH 121 Calculus and STA 119 Statistics. Graduates will receive a BS in Exercise Science and MPH in Epidemiology.

Suggested Introductory Courses

Students considering the ES major should consider taking ES 200 Introduction to Exercise Science, PGY 300 Human Physiology, and ES 207 Human Form and Function, as these courses provide an overview of the discipline and fundamental concepts in human anatomy and physiology that are essential for the major.
