Completing the Linguistics BA - Korean Language and Linguistics Concentration Program

Academic Requirements

Minimum GPA of 2.000 overall.
Minimum GPA of 2.500 in the prerequisite courses.

All undergraduate majors include at least 24-credit hours at the upper division (at least 300-level).

Academic Advice

Students with prior Korean language proficiency should consult with the program director to arrange an appropriate program.

Transfer Credit Policy

Due to the fact that relatively few students arrive at UB having taken a significant number of linguistics or Korean courses, the Department of Linguistics does not have specific transfer credit policies. The possibility of transfer credits can be discussed on a case-by-case basis with the program directors.

KOR 499 Senior Capstone Course

One 300/400-level course in linguistics (3 credits, such as the following):

Five 300/400-level in specialization language (minimum of 15 credits, such as the following):

  • KOR 301 Third-Year Korean
  • KOR 302 Third-Year Korean
  • KOR 401 Advanced Korean Readings and Conversation
  • KOR 402 Advanced Korean Readings and Conversation (Second Semester)
  • KOR 421 Korean Language and Culture
  • KOR 496 Internship/Practicum

UB Seminar courses cannot count towards major requirements.

*Students are required to complete the first 4 language courses unless waived by the Department based on placement results or demonstrated proficiency.

Departmental Honors Requirements

Students who wish to be considered for Honors in the Linguistics BA must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher within the major and complete LIN 497 for three credits as one of their elective options with a grade of B or higher where they will work with a faculty advisor on a major research paper or project. For those students enrolled in the Chinese, Japanese, or Korean Language and Linguistics concentrations, LIN 497 may replace the otherwise required Senior Capstone course associated with those concentrations.

**Students must demonstrate Korean proficiency through the second year (up to 18 credits). The bachelor degree requires 120 credits total, therefore the number of additional electives required will vary based on the number of language credits needed.

Students should consult with an academic advisor to determine how any transfer or exam credit might be utilized in meeting general education, prerequisite, or major requirements.
