Manufacturing Minor - Applying to the Program

(HEGIS: , CIP: 14.3601 Manufacturing Engineering)

Becoming a Manufacturing Minor Student

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores, if applicable. UB supports SUNY’s decision to temporarily suspend SAT and ACT requirements for admissions for the 2021-22 academic year. This temporary change of admissions eligibility requirements applies to the spring 2021, fall 2021 and spring 2022 cycles. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered.

The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Students must be matriculated at the University at Buffalo, in good standing, and pursing a major in order to apply for a minor in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Admission to the manufacturing minor requires:

  1. One of the following:
    1. Academic good standing within an approved major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
    2. Satisfaction of the core course requirement for admission to an engineering major:
      1. Completion of four required core courses (see below) with grades of C– or better and a combined core course grade point average of at least 2.500. Students are permitted to repeat at most two core courses one time.
      2. The minimum overall cumulative GPA required for the major. The GPAs required for admission vary by academic year and requested major. The table below provides the GPA requirement for the current academic year.
      3. Note: Students within an intended major are required to meet the GPA requirement for the academic year he/she was admitted to that intended major. Students are encouraged to review their admissions Progress Report to determine the requirement applicable to them.

        Core Courses

        Engineering Courses:

        1.  Calculus 1 (MTH 141 or MTH 153)
        2.  Calculus 2 (MTH 142 or MTH 154)
        3. General Chemistry 1 (CHE 101, CHE 105, or CHE 107)
        4. General Physics 1 (PHY 107 or PHY 117)

        Computer Science / Bioinformatics Courses:

        1.    Calculus 1 (MTH 141 or MTH 153; students applying for the BA computer science degree may complete MTH 121 or MTH 131)
        2.    Introduction to Computer Science for Majors 1 (CSE 115)
        3.    Introduction to Computer Science for Majors 2 (CSE 116)
        4.    Discrete Structures (CSE 191 or MTH 191)

  2. Submission of the SEAS Major/Minor Change Application by November 15 for Spring admission and by March 15 for Fall admission. Students who apply after this deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
  3. Completion of a total of 45 credit hours (at UB or elsewhere). Note that students may apply to the program while registered in courses that will bring them to 45 total credit hours.
  4. Minimum overall and UB cumulative GPAs of 2.500. Admission will be limited to 25 students per year, and therefore the GPAs of admitted students may be higher. When demand exceeds capacity, the overall academic history of applicants will be considered in admission decisions.
