Mathematics BA - General Study in Mathematics and Education Concentration - Academic Experience

MTH 499 Independent Study in Mathematics can be used either for a ``reading course,'' where the student reads an advanced mathematical work under the supervision of a faculty member, or for work on an original research project under the supervision of a faculty member. In addition, students can apply to participate in the directed readings program, where they read or work under the supervision of graduate student mentors.

Math Tutoring
Math majors in good academic standing are encouraged to tutor freshmen/sophomore level math in the Math Place Tutoring Lab run by the Learning Center. This is particularly attractive to students preparing for careers in teaching.

MTH 495 Undergraduate Supervised Teaching gives math majors with excellent grades the opportunity to gain teaching experience running their own recitations, as well as grading, while also earning course credit.

MTH 496 Internship in Mathematics allows students to earn course credit for completing an internship which is relevant to their degree, and completing a brief report describing the work that they did. Students are responsible for finding their own internships. Internship opportunities are advertised regularly on the mathematics major listserv. The internship supervisor must confirm satisfactory completion.

Use of study abroad credit to complete requirements of the mathematics major. Many of the required courses in the mathematics major are quite standardized globally and have equivalents at virtually any college or university. Upper level mathematics courses can be used towards MTH elective requirements even if no equivalent course is offered at UB. Interested students should consult with Study Abroad and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics to determine which courses can be articulated.

Association for Women in Mathematics

This is the local UB chapter of an internationally recognized nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging women and girls to have active careers in the mathematical sciences. Interested students can join the listserv.

Harriet F. Montague Award
This award is presented to an undergraduate math major after the completion of his or her junior year, and is awarded on the basis of intellectual and creative promise in mathematics.

Harry Merrill Gehman Endowment Award
This award is presented to an undergraduate math major whose goal is to teach mathematics, and is awarded after the completion of the junior year for outstanding achievement.
