Transfer Credit Policy

The major in public health follows general UB policies with respect to transfer credit. Students can review the TAURUS listing of articulated transfer courses to see if a course taken at another institution will count towards a public health program requirement. If a student has taken a course that is not listed on the TAURUS website they can contact the Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) to discuss.

Prerequisite Courses

The Public Health BS has no prerequisite courses.

The MPH also has no prerequisite courses, however the following undergraduate course are highly recommended:

  • One general biology course
  • One health related science course (e.g., nutrition, anatomy, microbiology, or physiology)
  • One college level mathematics course (e.g., calculus or statistics; calculus is preferred for students concentrating in epidemiology) and at least two years of high school algebra
  • One year of college level chemistry
  • Two courses in behavioral sciences, including a course in sociology or social psychology, and a course in subjects such as anthropology, psychology, political science or economics

Required Courses

This 3+2 program will consist of three years of undergraduate coursework in the BS in Public Health where you will complete core public health courses, followed by two years of the MPH coursework including foundational and concentration courses, electives, a field training experience and a culminating project.

BS in Public Health Courses:

  • PUB 101 Introduction to Public Health
  • PUB 102 Historical and Contemporary Public Health Problems
  • PUB 200-level 
    • Select two (2) 200-level PUB courses numbered 200-279 (total of 6 credit-hours minimum)
  • PUB 310 Biological, Personal, and Environmental Influences on Health and Disease
  • PUB 315 Asking and Answering Scientific Questions in Public Health 
  • PUB 320 Models and Mechanisms for Understanding Public Health Issues
  • PUB 325 Interventions to Improve Public Health
  • PUB 330 Systems and Policies for Public Health
  • 300/400 level PUB

Students in the Public Health BS are waived from the following major requirements if admitted to the 3+2 program:

  • Select three (3) 300/400-level PUB courses numbered 340-379 or 400-479 (total of 9 credit hours minimum)
  • PUB 494 Capstone: Modern Public Health Problems and Solutions

Additional Coursework:

Students entering the major take a Communication Literacy II course.
