Extracurricular Activities

Student Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH)

SASH, an organization led by undergraduates, exists to unite students who intend on entering the workforce as SLPs and AUDs. The club strives to make Speech and Hearing Science majors active learners and to ignite a genuine passion for the specialized field. Members participate in a variety of relevant activities throughout Western New York. SASH members attend educational seminars, contribute to activities in nursing homes and hospitals, and volunteer at charity walks. SASH members attend on-campus meetings meant to enhance social and learning experiences, whether it be to prepare for the graduate school application process or to celebrate our field during Better Hearing & Speech Month. SASH can be contacted by email. Questions, suggestions and requests to join SASH are always welcome!

Also, please visit the UB Student Association for more information.

Honors and Awards

The Dean of UB’s College of Arts and Sciences recognizes the undergraduate who has best demonstrated the highest level of academic achievement and involvement in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences and the field of speech and hearing science.

Departmental Honors

The CDS Honors Program awards excellence by encouraging students to take an in-depth study in a specialty area within the fields of Communicative Disorders and Sciences. Students gain a more sophisticated understanding of at least one aspect of the field and develop their analytical skills or creative talents.

The CDS Honors Program allows qualified seniors the opportunity for an extensive laboratory and scientific writing experience. During this year, seniors engage in a year-long research project in a single lab. The lab is selected by the student to fit his/her interests in the field. A mentor is chosen to work closely with the student during the year to guide the student in writing and orally presenting the required senior thesis. Students who complete the project receive a recognition certificate from the department. Students who pursue this program should enroll in CDS 497 Departmental Honors Thesis. The thesis must be submitted and approved by the thesis advisor and co-advisor.
