Completing the Art History BA Program

Academic Requirements

Minimum GPA of 2.0 overall.
Minimum GPA of 2.0 in departmental courses.
Completion of or registration in the three required introductory courses: AHI 101, AHI 102, VS 150

Academic Advice

The student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50 to remain in good standing in the Art History BA program. If students drop below this GPA, they will be placed on department probation and given a semester to improve their standing. Students who do not improve will be dismissed from the program. To graduate, a minimum GPA of 2.0 is compulsory in all courses required for the BA degree.

Transfer Credit Policy

When a student transfers from another institution, their coursework must be equivalent to UB art history courses. Transfer credits are applied toward the department's degree requirements toward the art history major.

SUNY Seamless Transfer is a SUNY-wide program intended to make transferring to UB and other SUNY schools simple and efficient for SUNY students. SUNY has defined courses that SUNY students can take before transferring which will apply to the major at UB and ensure timely graduation.

Residency Requirement

A student must complete a minimum of 30 undergraduate credit hours (the equivalent of one full year of study) at the University at Buffalo in order to earn a degree from the university. The following forms of credit may not be used to fulfill the residency requirement: transfer work, proficiency exams, Advanced Placement, military training, study abroad, cross-registration, international baccalaureate credit and experiential learning.

*Proficiency in a foreign language through the first semester of the second year or its equivalent is required, to be demonstrated through classroom courses or through alternatives outlined in the Foreign Language Placement section of this catalog. American Sign Language cannot be used to fulfill this language requirement. S/U grading may not be selected for courses taken to fulfill this requirement.

Departmental Honors Requirements

A minimum of 50% of credits for the major or minor program must be completed at UB. The University requires a minimum of 3.20 for “with distinction”; 3.50 for “with high distinction”; and 3.75 for “with highest distinction.”
