Admissions is competitive and granted on a space available basis. Academic Advisement is available by contacting the BCLS Academic Advisor at 716-829-5182. All applicants must apply to both UB (matriculation to the University) and to the Medical Technology Program (to become an approved/ accepted major). The Medical Technology application and all official transcripts must be received in MT by January 15th. Applications are available at the departmental office, or online. Successful candidates will present a strong academic record. All prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of the MT program, which begins each fall. At the time of application, candidates must be registered in their final prerequisites. Approximately 18-22 students are accepted each year; most successful candidates accepted to Medical Technology well exceed the minimum GPA listed below:
- Minimum GPA of 2.0 overall
- Minimum GPA of 2.0 in prerequisite courses
Admission to UB is highly competitive. For the 2016 incoming freshman class, UB reported an average ACT score of 24-30 and an average SAT (CR+M) score of 1100-1300. 90 percent of admitted students are in the top 50 percent of their class.
Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank, SAT (critical reading and math) or ACT scores, and strength of the high school academic record. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered.
The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:
- Four years of English (with a substantial writing component)
- Four years of social studies
- Three years of college-preparatory science
- Three years of a second language
- Three years of college-preparatory mathematics

Transfer students are encouraged and welcome to meet the BCLS Undergraduate Academic Advisor for both an academic review of the transfer courses taken, as well as academic planning for future coursework, allowing a smooth transfer between schools. Many SUNY community colleges and colleges are well articulated between transfer coursework and UB for MT prerequisites and UB Curriculum requirements. Individual meetings with the BCLS advisor can be in-person for students who can come to UB, or via email and/or telephone, for students who seek advisement and are not regionally able to come to campus. Application deadline is January 15th for the next fall semester. Students are advised that program admission is available for fall semesters only.
An application to the BTE program is required, and are available online. The deadline is January 15 for the future fall semester. An extension of this deadline is not guaranteed, but may be considered, based on space availability.
