Becoming a(n) Social Sciences Interdisciplinary BA - Environmental Studies Concentration Student

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is highly competitive. For the 2016 incoming freshman class, UB reported an average ACT score of 24-30 and an average SAT (CR+M) score of 1100-1300. 90 percent of admitted students are in the top 50 percent of their class.

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank, SAT (critical reading and math) or ACT scores, and strength of the high school academic record. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered.

The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component)
  • Four years of social studies
  • Three years of college-preparatory science
  • Three years of a second language
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics

Transfer Admission to the Program

Transfer students must first apply to the university and meet the university's transfer admission requirements. Applications are then forwarded to the SSC office for review and major course equivalency evaluation.

Newly admitted transfer students who have completed the prerequisite requirements or who enter with 60 or more transfer credit hours are accepted to the major on a provisional basis. Full admission is obtained through completion of prerequisite requirements with the required grade(s) and attaining a minimum UB GPA of 2.0 within a specified time frame.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Students should complete the pre-requisite course(s) and apply for admission to the major no later than the end of their sophomore year. Students are expected to follow major requirements as listed in the catalog for the academic year during which they are admitted to the major.

To be eligible for admission to the SSC/Environmental Studies major students are required to attain a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course and to have a minimum UB grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
