Why study Creative Writing Certificate Program at UB?

*Not a baccalaureate degree program

The English Department now offers a Creative Writing Certificate. The certificate welcomes students of any major. The new Creative Writing Certificate is specifically designed to support young writers. Our distinctive mentorship program encourages conversations between faculty and students, between peer writers, as well as the many guest writers who visit UB each semester in our nationally regarded Exhibit X Fiction and Poetics Plus Series.

Learning Outcomes

The Creative Writing Certificate Program aims to give students the skill sets they need to:

  • Follow a career path as writers
  • Publish their work
  • Successfully apply to graduate programs in creative writing (MA, MFA, PhD) in the genre of their choice by submitting material nurtured with the help of UB's faculty.

The Learning Environment

The central mission of the English department is to offer students a unique learning experience that features small classes, lively discussion with their fellow students, and close working relationships with faculty members. Our curriculum provides opportunities to discover literature and cinema from around the world, to develop as creative writers, and to practice the craft of journalism. In classes of every size (from large lecture courses to seminars, workshops, independent studies, and senior thesis projects), at all levels of instruction, whether in the classroom or online, our goal is to foster the individual growth of our students as readers and writers through critical thinking, class discussion, exploration and experimentation.

About Our Facilities

The home of English Department is Clemens Hall, where students come to meet with faculty advisors and mentors during office hours. The department holds classes in centrally scheduled spaces throughout the campus, which includes traditional classrooms and lecture halls that are amenable to our program’s teaching goals.

Academic Advising

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.3 overall in required and elective certificate courses in order to be awarded the certificate upon completion of their Bachelors Degree.
