Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), SAT or ACT scores and strength of the high school academic record. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered. For the 2018 admitted freshman class, UB reported an average ACT score of 25-30 and an average SAT score of 1190-1350. The average GPA ranged from 91-96.

The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Freshman Admission to the Program

The School of Management admits incoming freshmen directly to the accounting major. For direct admission, prospective freshmen are required to select accounting on the UB application.

In the first two years, you will complete the UB Curriculum and 7 prerequisite courses for your major. As a freshman admitted to the major, you must maintain the minimum standard required to advance to the upper-division curriculum. The main criterion for advancement is your academic performance in your freshman and sophomore courses.

We encourage high school students interested in accounting or business administration majors to apply early for admission to UB. We recommend you complete pre-calculus and be calculus-ready before enrolling at UB.

The following standards must be achieved prior to junior year major requirements:

  • completion of MGA 201 and MGA 202 with minimum grades of B
  • minimum GPA of 3.0 in the seven prerequisite courses
  • an overall, transfer, and UB GPA minimum of 3.0
  • junior standing (60 credits)

Transfer Admission to the Program

For students interested in transferring to UB, the first step is to gain admission to the university. After accepting admission to UB and submitting a deposit, new incoming transfer students who select business administration or accounting as their applied major will automatically have their transcripts reviewed by the School of Management. To be considered for direct admission at the lower-division or gain junior-year admission to accounting or business administration, students must meet theĀ School of Management minimum standards before starting the junior-year curriculum.

Important note: To be eligible for the accounting or business administration majors in the School of Management, you must meet the minimum overall transfer GPA when entering UB.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Current UB students who did not apply to the School of Management at entry to UB who wish to change majors to accounting will also need to satisfy these prerequisite and GPA admission/continuation criteria and may apply online. Students may visit 204 Alfiero Center to declare their interest in changing to accounting or in changing from accounting to business administration at any time. Please be aware that the junior-level accounting curriculum is sequential and can only be started in a fall term after successfully completing the lower-division requirements. However, in order to best facilitate proper course registration, students ought to complete the change of major request on-line as soon as they are considering the accounting major.
