Experiential Learning

Asian Studies majors can earn credit for Asia-related internships here in Buffalo, in their home cities, or where ever opportunity arises. The Asian Studies Program offers internships in the Asian Studies Program office, where student learn and participate in the activities and management of an internationally focused area studies program. Students can also have internship opportunities with WTC Buffalo/Niagara and Empire State Development internship opportunities. The required Senior Capstone course provides opportunities for guided independent, original research with primary source materials.

Study Abroad

Students majoring in Asian Studies are encouraged to study abroad in Asia, although it is not a requirement for successful completion of the degree. Students studying abroad can take language study and non-language classes. They can spend an academic year, a semester, or attend a summer program at outstanding universities throughout Asia on programs offered by the University at Buffalo and other SUNY campuses. Academic credit can be transferred to UB.

Extracurricular Activities

The Asian Studies Program sponsors an on-going series of presentations called Asia@Noon, hosts exhibitions and performing artists from Asia, and organizes special lectures and conferences. Weekly newsletters and timely Facebook posts keep students apprised of these opportunities and others organized at UB and throughout the Buffalo area.

Majors and minors are encouraged to join student organizations that focus on Asian cultures. Students in Asian Studies run the Undergraduate Asian Studies Student Association.

Honors and Awards

Each year, the Asian Studies Program nominates one of our graduating seniors for the College of Arts and Science Outstanding Student Award.
