Why study Civil Engineering BS/MBA at UB?

Engineers have strong analytical and strategic skills. They are able to examine complex issues from all angles. Engineers posses both quantitative and qualitative skill sets that give them a good start when they enter the workforce. Graduates of MBA programs are typically known for their effective communication skills, networking know-how, their strategic research and analysis abilities, and best practice knowledge in leadership roles. Combining these two skill sets will most certainly make the graduates of this program stand out in the workforce. Your engineering background provides the technical knowledge that will allow you to work on product engineering and research development. Combined with your MBA, you can act as a bridge between technical experts and senior management. In a way, it is a training that allows you to speak two languages (technical and business) thus adding value to your team and to you as an individual employee.

Learning Outcomes

The curriculum is designed to meet several educational objectives. These broad statements describe what we expect our graduates to achieve within a few years of graduation. Our program educational objectives are:

  • Satisfy the requirements of their employers for professional practice in civil engineering, and
  • Continue their professional development in civil engineering, including professional licensure, continuing education, and/or graduate study.

In addition, the curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop the following knowledge, skills, and behaviors by the time of graduation:

1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics

2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences

4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives

6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

The MBA component of the curriculum is designed so that students will:

  1. Develop knowledge and skills essential for effective management.
  2. Be able to analyze complex information in order to make informed, ethical decisions with the consideration of various stakeholders.
  3. Be effective team members, will develop essential communication skills, and will develop cultural competence for a global environment.

The Learning Environment

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers nine engineering programs leading to the degree of bachelor of science (BS) degree: aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial and mechanical engineering.

Seven combined BS/MBA programs are offered in conjunction with the School of Management. BA, BS, and BS/MS degrees in computer science are offered through the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. BS/MS degrees are offered through the Departments of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. A BS degree in engineering physics is offered jointly with the Department of Physics.

The curricula allow students flexibility in their programs of study and encourages interaction between students and faculty. The undergraduate educational experience prepares students for professional practice and advanced study. Special programs including our experiential learning program, undergraduate research, and internship opportunities provide professional development skills and experiences and facilitate placement of our graduates in high-quality engineering positions.

About Our Facilities

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences occupies six buildings on UB's north campus: Bell, Bonner, Davis, Furnas, Jarvis, and Ketter Hall.

Together, these buildings form an outstanding educational and research facility, comprising 275,000 square feet of laboratory and office space.

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering houses state-of-the-art undergraduate laboratories in the areas of materials, fluid mechanics and hydraulics and soil mechanics. The department also has undergraduate computing labs equipped with all the discipline-specific software students will use in the civil engineering program. In addition, the department is home to a world-class structural engineering and earthquake simulation laboratory, where many students participate in undergraduate research. Career Outlook

Once you complete both degrees and start your job in industry, you will possess a toolkit that will allow you to take leadership positions where marketing, strategy, accounting, or finance is combined with technical job requirements. You will be able to work in data analytics, operation, process optimization, or commercialization. Your people skills will be well-developed, allowing you to compete for more senior positions in leadership roles. With this combined training, your career outlook will include macro-level team management and entrepreneurial ventures.

Academic Advising

Students obtain academic advice and guidance from the academic advisors in the SEAS Office of Undergraduate Education (410 Bonner Hall) and from faculty advisors in their program of study. The Office of Undergraduate Education advises all students throughout their first two years of study. In the junior and senior years, students seek advisement primarily from departmental faculty advisors.

New and transfer students are encouraged to meet with their faculty advisors as soon as possible to discuss their program of study; continuing students are required to meet with their advisors at least once each semester. The role of the faculty advisor is to assist students in choosing courses to complete their degree requirements in a timely fashion.

Scholarships and Financial Support

There are many scholarships, fellowships and other funding opportunities available for students accepted into the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. These include recruitment scholarships and annual scholarships/awards for current students. There are both merit and need-based scholarships.

All scholarships are currently offered through UB's scholarship portal.

Scholarships specifically for civil engineering students are:

  • The Richard E. Garman Endowment Fund intended for undergraduate majors in civil, structural or environmental engineering who have financial need.
  • The Lawrence M. and Caroline Ursitti Gentile Family Fund presented to students interested in concrete research or concrete structures and with financial need.
  • The Joseph M. Bracci and Kathleen A. Bracci Scholarship intended to provide financial support to undergraduate students to conduct research with preference to students majoring in civil engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering.
  • The Colonel Loren W. Olmstead Scholarship Fund for undergraduate civil engineering majors
  • Paul Koessler Memorial Scholarship intended for students in the junior or senior year of the undergraduate Civil Engineering program, or in a graduate program focusing on Transportation or Structural Engineering (external application required)
  • ASCE Julian Snyder Endowment Fund Scholarship awarded for academic achievement and active participation in student activities.
