Transfer Credit Policy

Transfer students majoring in history may receive credit for up to five history courses (15 credit hours) but must take seven upper-level history courses, including the two 400-level seminars, at UB. Whenever possible, transfer courses are articulated with existing UB history courses. Students may transfer up to two history courses (6 credit hours) for credit toward the minor. Transfer students should come to the undergraduate studies office for advisement.

SUNY Seamless Transfer is a SUNY-wide program intended to make transferring to UB and other SUNY Schools simple and efficient for SUNY students. SUNY has defined courses that SUNY students can take before transferring which will apply to the major at UB and ensure timely graduation.

9 credits of liberal arts electives, at least 5 must be upper Level (300/400)
Twelve history courses (36 credit hours) distributed as described below. A minimum of eight must be upper-division courses (300-400 level), including a minimum of two 400-level seminars.

  • Level and Breadth: To ensure a broad knowledge of history, all history majors must take at least one course, at any level, in each of the following areas:
    • Early or modern history of any civilization to 1800 (EAR)
    • Asian, African continent, or Latin American history of any period (AAL)
    • Modern European history since 1800 (MOD)
    • U.S. History (US)

NYS Education Department requires students in social studies teacher preparation programs meet the following requirements, which may be double-dip with the Pathways UB Curriculum requirements.

  • One three-credit course in a foreign language (American Sign Language is an acceptable course)
  • One three-credit course in arts/artistic expression
  • One ECO course any level (Recommend ECO 181 or ECO 182)
  • One PSC course any level (Recommend PSC 102)
  • One GEO course at any level, excluding courses approved for SLI (Recommend GEO 100, GEO 102, or GEO 120)

In addition, NYS requires a course in Scientific Process.  SLI will cover this requirement, with the exception of Nutrition.

Departmental Honors Requirements

Department Honors are achieved when students fulfill the standard requirements for the major (as stated above), and a two-semester sequence of research seminars. These are Honors Thesis 497 I (seminar) and Honors Thesis 497 II (tutorial), in which students prepare a thesis of approximately thirty to forty pages. Upon admission to the program, honors students are responsible for arranging with a faculty mentor to guide their thesis research and writing, normally completed in the senior year. Honors students who complete the thesis and attain a minimum GPA of 3.33 in the major will graduate with Honors in history.
