Academic Opportunities

Archaeology students have the opportunity to participate in field schools to develop skills in hands-on environments. Our department offers its own archaeological field school. For more information, please visit the Archaeological Survey webpage and the Field School webpage.

Experiential Learning

Anthropology students in all three sub-disciplines have been successful in securing a wide variety of internships and practice with hands-on experience.

Study Abroad

Archaeology students have had excellent experiences studying abroad in the following field schools:


  • Narta Lagoon Archaeological Project


  • Çadir Höyük Archaeological Project
  • Çatalhöyük West Mound Project
  • Seyitomer Höyük Archaeological Project


  • Cumidava Archaeological Research Project (CARP)


  • In conjunction with the Department of Classics, the department also sponsors a study abroad program on cultural heritage in Tarragona, Spain.

The department encourages students to engage in other study abroad experiences as well. These opportunities are presented on the UB Study Abroad webpage.

Extracurricular Activities

The Undergraduate Anthropology Club serves several academic, social and professional purposes. The club has sponsored field trips to museums in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Toronto, and has worked with the faculty advisor in seminars on application to graduate school, resume preparation and job hunting. Honors and Awards

  • The Lucia Maria Houpt Award is presented to the outstanding graduating senior in the Department of Anthropology, based on GPA, departmental service and university-wide service.
  • The Marion Dickson Award for Outstanding Junior is given to a junior student based on overall and departmental GPA and departmental service.
  • The Justin Van Ness Award is awarded to a graduating senior with documented interest in the environment.
  • The Klein Family Award is awarded to a graduating senior with documented plans to attend medical or dental school.
  • The Nathaniel Cantor Award is awarded to a graduating senior with documented plans to pursue work in Social Work or Vocational Rehabilitation.
  • The Undergraduate Professional Activities and Achievement in Anthropology Award is presented to a graduating senior who has engaged in professional activities that warrant special recognition.
  • The Leadership Award is presented to an undergraduate student with dedication to the Department of Anthropology through service.

Departmental Honors

Honors in Anthropology is achieved by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.500 in the major and satisfactorily completing a two-semester research project through intensive consultation with a thesis advisor and two more faculty members. For more information, visit the Honors in Anthropology webpage.
