Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered. For the 2019 admitted freshman class, UB reported an average GPA range from 90-96, an average ACT score of 24-30 and an average SAT score of 1180-1350.
The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Freshman Admission to the Program

All freshmen with interest in BIO are coded as Approved majors for the BA portion of the degree if they select Biological Sciences (BIO) on their application. Students do not apply to the BA/MS program until their fifth undergraduate semester.

Transfer Admission to the Program

Transfer students are reminded that at least 16 credit hours of upper-division coursework must be completed within the department with a minimum GPA of 2.000.

Students transferring to UB and/or the major from another degree program apply to major (the BA program). The request will be reviewed for meeting the 2.000 minimum in required BIO and MTH/CHE courses already taken (of MTH 121-MTH 122 or MTH 141-MTH 142, CHE 101-CHE 102, CHE 203/CHE 205-CHE 204/CHE 206; BIO 200-BIO 201-BIO 303-BIO 305).

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Students already in the BA or BS program may apply in their junior year to be upgraded to the BA/MS program if they have:

Suggested Introductory Courses
