Becoming a Computational Physics BS Student

In order to be admitted to either of the Computational Physics degree programs, students should contact the Undergraduate Director of the Department of Physics, Professor John Cerne by email; 716-645-2542; or 128 Fronczak Hall. There are no application deadlines.

Becoming a University at Buffalo Student

Admission to UB is based on a holistic review. We consider high school average, class rank (where applicable), strength of the high school academic record and SAT or ACT scores. A personal essay, recommendations, documented creative talent, demonstrated leadership, community service and special circumstances are also considered. For the 2019 admitted freshman class, UB reported an average GPA range from 90-96, an average ACT score of 24-30 and an average SAT score of 1180-1350.
The following is not required for admission, but is suggested as adequate preparation for university-level coursework:

  • Four years of English (with a substantial writing component).
  • Four years of social studies.
  • Three years of college-preparatory science.
  • Three years of a second language.
  • Three years of college-preparatory mathematics.

Transfer Admission to the Program

Transfer students should make sure all their courses from their previous institutions are articulated (transferred) into equivalent UB courses (not just TR 999). Many courses other institutions (especially if it is a SUNY school) are already in our course articulation database and will automatically be articulated. If you do not find your course at TAURUS, you will need to fill out a course articulation form and submit a detailed syllabus (including textbook used and chapters covered) of the previous course to Taurus. The forms are available on the TAURUS website.

Transfer students from accredited institutions are accepted into the BS program if they have completed, with a minimum GPA of 2.500, courses equivalent to CSE 115-CSE 116, MTH 141-MTH 142, and PHY 107-PHY 108/PHY 158.

Current UB Students Applying to the Program

Students who have completed CSE 115CSE 116, MTH 141MTH 142, PHY 107PHY 108/PHY 158 with an average grade of 2.500 or better, are eligible to be admitted to the program.

Suggested Introductory Courses

Students interested in pursuing a degree in computational physics should begin by taking CSE 115-CSE 116, MTH 141-MTH 142 and PHY 107-PHY 108 (or PHY 117-PHY 118, preferred) and PHY 158, or equivalent honors courses.
