Transfer Credit Policy

The English Department awards credit for courses take elsewhere that approximately correspond — in content, approach, and/or pedagogy — to courses offered in our program.

SUNY Seamless Transfer is a SUNY-wide program intended to make transferring to UB and other SUNY Schools simple and efficient for SUNY students. SUNY has defined courses that SUNY students can take before transferring which will apply to the major at UB and ensure timely graduation.

NYS Education Department requires students in teacher preparation programs meet the following requirements. Students are encouraged to meet these requirements via the Pathways UB Curriculum requirements.

  • One three-credit course in a foreign language (UB Area Languages)
  • One three-credit course in arts/artistic expression (UB Area Arts)
  • One three-credit course in Historical and Social Sciences (UB Area Social Science or Civilization and History)

In addition, NYS requires a course in Scientific Processes. SLI will cover this requirement, with the exception of Nutrition.

Departmental Honors Requirements

The English Honors program enables talented students to work more closely with faculty in seminar-style courses, and in writing a senior thesis. Honors students write a Senior Thesis, which consists of independent work culminating in a paper of 30-35 pages. Honors students are especially likely to participate with faculty on research projects or as research assistants.

To graduate with Honors in English, students must complete one English honors seminar (3 credits), and one Senior Thesis. Students complete the honors thesis in one or two semesters (3-6 credits).

English majors can enter the Honors Program in one of two ways:

  • Students with a 3.500 GPA or higher within the major can apply directly to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
  • Any English major who has a 3.800 GPA within the major, with grades in at least two 200-level and three 300-level English courses may, upon application, enter immediately into the Honors Program.
