This course serves as an introduction to various aspects of Standard Mandarin Chinese. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Students will learn about the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of the language from a functional grammatical point of view. They will also be exposed to recent experimental and psycholinguistic research on the language. The major topics to be covered are:  the sound system of Chinese;  Chinese word formation;  phrase structure and word order in Chinese;  tense and aspect in Chinese; and  information structure and discourse.
