- The Learning Environment
The Learning Environment
The Department of Communication offers a dynamic learning environment to students interested in careers in business, industry, government, non-profits, and a variety of other organizations. Although foundational courses may be offered in lecture format, many advanced courses are offered in seminar, discussion, recitation, or tutorial format which requires active learning on the part of students. In communication classes, students are expected to do more than just listen: they must read, write, discuss or be engaged in solving problems. Engaging in higher-order thinking tasks such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation help students prepare for productive and rewarding lives.
Faculty members take a social scientific view of the field of communication and encourage self-motivation and independent thinking. Students are encouraged to work with their advisors and instructors to explore the field and then focus their electives on the area of communication of most interest.

Some courses are taught remotely.
