This is a required introductory course in the first year of the master's degree in Biomedical Informatics and it is also open to students in other graduate degree programs who have completed BMI 501. It provides an overview of health care informatics application domains that build on or complement electronic health record systems as well as an introductory overview of the information management challenges of the U.S. and major international health care, public health and biomedical research systems. The class will include field-trip visits to local health care and other organizations to see these informatics applications in use, and to learn from the systems development and maintenance staff as well as end-users in these settings.
