This course provides an introduction to research design and methods in biomedical informatics and aims to enhance the students' quantitative and qualitative research skills. The course will be surveying the formulation of research questions, the development of testable hypotheses, the selection and application of appropriate research designs and methods, data collection and analysis methods. These skills can be applied in subsequent courses and research projects. A key element is the evaluation of published research papers. The course consists of six themes: the fundamentals of scientific research; qualitative research methods including statistics; clinical epidemiology, population studies and big data; theoretically informed qualitative research; integration of research methods in biomedical informatics; research ethics, including informed consent, and role of IRBs. The course will encompass lectures and practicums.
